David MacNaughton, who helped see Canada through the difficult NAFTA renegotiations, is leaving his position as Canada's ambassador to the United States at the end of the month.
In a statement, MacNaughton called the decision "bittersweet."
"Serving as Canada's ambassador in Washington, at this pivotal time in our country's history, has been the greatest honour of my life," he said.
"I cannot help but recall the dire situation we faced in early 2017, with Canada's most important trading relationship in grave peril. And hundreds of thousands of Canadians' livelihoods hanging in the balance."
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a statement said he accepted MacNaughton's resignation with "great affection and gratitude — and of course, considerable regret."
"David has long been and remains a trusted adviser, friend and counsellor. But he is more than that: he is a Canadian patriot, one whose honesty, moderation and wisdom were pivotal to Team Canada in our successful renegotiation of NAFTA in 2017 and 2018. For this, he has earned every Canadian's gratitude," he said in a statement...

Message sent out to the Trade
-------------------------------I wanted to provide an update on the drawdown of CBP officer support to the Border Patrol to address the humanitarian and security crisis along the Southwest border.  As you all know, 731 CBP officers had been reassigned from ports of entry to support the Border Patrol.  This past weekend, 151 CBPOs returned to their airports, seaports, northern and southern border ports.  By this Friday, August 9th, a total of 331 CBPOs will have been returned to their permanent duty stations, leaving 400 CBPOs to support Border Patrol.  We continue to monitor the crisis along the SWB and hope to continue to draw down the level of CBPO support as appropriate.  I will provide updates as warranted.

This posted in the Federal Register on 07/23/2019.
About Pilot:
CBP faces significant challenges in targeting Section 321 shipments, while still maintaining the clearance speeds the private sector has come to expect. This is because CBP does not receive adequate advance information in order to effectively and efficiently assess the security risk of the approximately 1.8 million Section 321 shipments that arrive each day.
More info on the Pilot can be found here.
